Starting a new job is an overwhelming experience, from learning the ropes to navigating the office layout. But who would have thought that one of the most innocent questions could trigger an uncomfortable confrontation?
Imagine this: you’re fresh in the office, unfamiliar with the hallways, and in need of the washroom. So, you ask the person who, logically, should know every corner of the building, your new overall boss. Seems harmless, right? Well, not for this boss. The mere question sparked an unexpected reaction, a rant filled with annoyance, as if you had asked something utterly out of line.
Are our bosses beyond these basic human interactions? It seems some want to be viewed as untouchable, high above the simple needs of everyday life. But let’s face it: behind the titles, the corner offices, and the intimidating demeanours, aren’t we all human? Bosses may want us to fear them, but when stripped down to basics, they’re just as likely to need directions to the restroom on their first day too.
It’s a curious dynamic, authority versus humanity. Should a superior’s position exclude them from the basic courtesy of answering an everyday question? It leaves us to wonder: is there an invisible boundary when it comes to communicating with our bosses? Or perhaps some leaders confuse respect with fear, forgetting that true leadership is built on approachability and empathy.
The next time you find yourself lost in a new workplace, you might think twice about who to ask for help. And maybe, just maybe, bosses will start remembering that their leadership extends beyond their office doors, to even the simplest questions like “Where’s the washroom?”
