Amenfi Central, Western Region, June 6, 2024 – In a significant political shake-up, Joana Gyan, one of Ghana’s most dedicated female politicians, has been appointed as the Chairperson for H.E. John Dramani Mahama’s campaign in the Amenfi Central Constituency. This pivotal appointment was confirmed in a statement signed by Hon. Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Joana Gyan’s rise to this influential position comes on the heels of her impressive victory in the 2024 Parliamentary Primaries, showcasing her unwavering dedication and leadership within the NDC. Her appointment is seen as a strategic move to secure victory in the upcoming elections, given her strong connection and support from the Amenfi Central community.
However, this appointment coincides with a turbulent period for the NDC in Amenfi Central. The party’s National Secretariat has suspended four key constituency executives, citing alleged anti-party activities. The suspended executives are Mr. Raphael Andoh Kwaw (Chairman), Mr. Richmond Aleke (Organizer), Madam Grace Kwaw (Women’s Organizer), and Madam Janet Fynn (Deputy Women’s Organizer). These suspensions are effective immediately and will last for an initial period of six months, with potential extensions based on ongoing investigations.
Adding to the intrigue, the sitting MP for Amenfi Central, Hon. Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah, has been summoned to appear before the Party’s Political Committee. This decision, along with the suspensions, was made during a Functional Executive Committee (FEC) meeting on June 5, 2024, highlighting the internal challenges facing the NDC in the lead-up to the elections.
As Joana Gyan steps into her new role amidst this backdrop of political unrest, all eyes will be on Amenfi Central to see how these developments will influence the NDC’s campaign and prospects in the 2024 elections.
