Titled ‘The Future Value of Work in Ghana,’ the latest report has uncovered a significant challenge: 24% of trained nurses and 50% of doctors in Ghana have migrated abroad due to poor working conditions. Compiled by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in partnership with the Statistical Service and the National Development Planning Commission, the report warns that Ghana’s health system could deteriorate further unless urgent actions are taken.
The document emphasizes the precarious state of Ghana’s healthcare sector, stressing the immediate need for practical measures to prevent a collapse. Despite demonstrating resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic, the health system faced critical shortages of essential supplies like personal protective equipment (PPE) and suffered from a shortage of qualified staff.
Furthermore, the report critiques Ghana’s health policies, highlighting deficiencies in promoting health, providing palliative and rehabilitative care, and advocating for a life course approach to health delivery. This approach aims to better support elderly individuals, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized groups who may struggle to access healthcare services.
