Actress Yvonne Nelson and activist Henry Osei Akoto are leading a much-anticipated protest against ongoing power outages in Ghana. The protest will take place at the entrance of the University of Ghana on Saturday, June 8, at 2 PM. The organizers have criticized the Akufo-Addo administration for downplaying the true state of the power situation in the country.
During the May Day celebration in Accra on May 1, 2024, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced that the issues causing erratic power supply, known as “dumsor,” had been resolved. He attributed this to successful repairs of transformers and improvements in gas supply. However, this statement contradicted his previous claims that there was no dumsor in the country.

Despite the President’s optimistic announcement, Ghanaians continue to suffer from unpredictable power outages, which are disrupting businesses and affecting healthcare services. At a press conference on June 5, Henry Osei Akoto emphasized that the protest will proceed as planned, with police clearance secured to ensure safety.

“We met with the police yesterday and agreed on security arrangements for the protest. We are urging all Ghanaians suffering from erratic power supply to join us at the University of Ghana entrance at 2 PM on Saturday to demand honesty from the government about the power situation,” Osei Akoto told XYZ News.

Osei Akoto highlighted that, despite government claims of no power cuts, many Ghanaians are experiencing significant disruptions in their homes and workplaces. “People are incurring losses at their workplaces due to dumsor, yet the government keeps lying that the power crisis is over. We all know the government owes power producers and lacks funds to settle the debts,” he added.

Antwi Sylvestin Ronald, convener for United Voices for Change (UVC), also attended the press conference and guaranteed his group’s support for the protest on Saturday.
