William Essu, a former goalkeeper for Legon Cities and member of Ghana’s U-23 team, has passed away at the age of 22. Essu died on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at the University of Cape Coast Hospital in the Central Region.

Despite undergoing numerous medical tests, doctors were unable to determine the cause of his illness. He was subsequently transferred to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital for further evaluation, but the results remained inconclusive. Initially, Essu’s condition appeared to improve on Saturday afternoon, but it worsened that evening, leading to his untimely death.

Essu had appealed to the Ministry of Youth and Sports for outstanding bonuses to cover his medical expenses but tragically passed away without receiving the funds owed to him for his service to the country. His death marks the second loss of a goalkeeper for Legon Cities in less than a year, following the death of Sylvester Sackey in September 2023.
