Professor Francis Nkrumah, the eldest son of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has passed away at 89. The cause of death is currently unknown.

Indian author Vijay Prashad announced his death on X (formerly Twitter) on June 30, 2024. Francis Nkrumah, a beloved paediatrician, remained in Ghana after the coup against his father and continued his work as a doctor and scientist.

His brother, Sekou Nkrumah, shared a photo of him on Facebook, prompting messages of condolence from social media users.

Professor Nkrumah was the longest-serving Director of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) and was honoured for his efforts in eradicating poliomyelitis in Africa. In October 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) Africa Region recognized his contributions to public health and his role as a founding member of the Paediatric Association of Ghana and the West African College of Physicians.
