Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, responded to criticisms from Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin regarding her age.

At 72, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang is running alongside 65-year-old John Mahama for the presidency. Addressing female media professionals in Accra, she expressed pride in her age, countering Afenyo-Markin’s remarks, which were seen as attempts to undermine her candidacy based on age rather than qualifications.

She emphasized that her experience and wisdom are valuable assets for her role if the NDC wins. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted her extensive background, asserting it equips her to contribute effectively to the country’s leadership.

She urged the public to look beyond age and focus on experience and competence, essential qualities for national progress.

“I’m proud of every minute God has given me, and if He gives me more, I’ll be grateful. My life is in His hands, not anybody else’s. I consider my age a blessing, not a nuisance.

“Is that all they can criticize? Did they accuse me of corruption or insults? We must see such comments as unnecessary distractions. What about their own selves? I never claimed to be perfect, but I haven’t harmed anyone.

“I’m happy with myself, proud of how far God has brought me, and believe God will take everyone further,” she insisted.
