The internal conflict within the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Walewale Constituency escalated into violence as supporters of incumbent MP Hajia Lariba Abudu and Dr. Tia Abudu Kabiru clashed at Eagle FM 94.1Mhz in Walewale. This altercation stems from the disputed parliamentary primary results.

Dr. Abudu Kabiru emerged victorious in the January 27 primary, securing 145 votes against Hajia Lariba Abudu’s 138. Dissatisfied with the outcome, Hajia Lariba Abudu filed a case at the Tamale High Court, challenging the election results. In response, the NPP sought an out-of-court settlement, a request granted by Justice Richard Kogyapwah for a six-week resolution period.

Despite the court’s decision, tensions flared at Eagle FM when supporters of Kabiru, discussing the matter on-air, were attacked by thugs believed to be aligned with Hajia Lariba Abudu. The altercation was led by Musah, son of the NPP North East Regional Council of Elders chairman. The incident quickly escalated as more supporters rushed to the station, though Musah had fled by the time they arrived.

The ongoing dispute and the failure of party leadership to resolve it have kept the issue at the forefront of local discussions. Professor Naa Nabila Sulemana, Chairman of the NPP North-East Regional Council of Elders, criticized Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for not intervening, despite his close family ties to the former MP.

As the NPP grapples with these internal divisions, the conflict underscores the challenges the party faces in maintaining unity within the Walewale Constituency.
