The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has traditionally relied on the Ashanti Region for strong electoral support since the Fourth Republic began in 1992. However, party founder Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe warns that this region cannot be counted on indefinitely.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe advised the party leadership against choosing a running mate for the 2024 elections based solely on Ashanti Region preferences. His comments follow rumours that Dr. Bawumia has proposed Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as his running mate.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe expressed doubts about Bawumia’s ability to choose his own running mate, suggesting that external influences would dictate the choice. He emphasized that relying too heavily on Ashanti Region votes is risky, as voters there face the same challenges as the rest of the country.

Additionally, some NPP members, including Asante Akyem North MP Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, have expressed reservations about Dr. Prempeh’s suitability as a running mate.
