Stepping onto the grounds of my alma mater for the first time, I couldn’t have imagined how profoundly it would shape the course of my life. Nestled in the heart of Ghana, this institution was more than just a place of learning, it was a home, a community, and a sanctuary where dreams were nurtured and life lessons were imparted. For many of us, our alma mater stands as a beacon of personal growth and a foundation for our futures.

I still remember my first day, walking through the gates of the school with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. The extensive campus seemed overwhelming, and the faces of the students bustling around were unfamiliar. Yet, as the days went by, the unfamiliar became comforting. The towering trees, the chatter-filled corridors, the forest that surrounds the school, and the rhythmic sounds of siren signalling the end of classes and serving as our rising alarm soon became part of the fabric of my daily life.

In Ghana, we often hear people say, “Education is the key to success.” While that is true, my alma mater taught me that success is more than just academic achievement, it’s about the values, relationships, and resilience you build along the way.

One of the most profound memories I hold dear is the spirit of community that thrived within the walls of the school. In typical Ghanaian fashion, senior students mentored the juniors, creating a system of informal guidance that extended beyond textbooks. Our “school father” or “school mother” was not just a title but a relationship that fostered a sense of belonging and responsibility.

Every Sunday was special. My favourites evening were when food served at dinner was the favourite of all students; the rush and struggle to become the heads of the table was a thrill that I would never forget. Sunday and revival services were top notch. We celebrated the school’s anniversary in grand style, with cultural performances and activities that brought the entire school together, alumni’s adding to the joyous moments.  These were moments when we proudly wore our colourful school cloths and danced to every tune that sounded pleasing to the ear, reminding us that while we pursued knowledge in the classroom, our roots were grounded in Ghanaian heritage.

Academically, my alma mater stood tall among the top schools in the country, with a rich history of producing pioneers. However, beyond the confines of textbooks, it taught us the value of discipline and perseverance. The morning assemblies were where we learned punctuality, and the school debates sharpened our critical thinking and public speaking skills.

The countless hours spent in the school library, poring over literature from Achebe to Darmani, not only broadened our intellectual horizons but also instilled in us the habit of reading, a skill that would serve us well in all spheres of life.

Perhaps one of the greatest gifts my alma mater gave me was the friendships I forged. Many of the people I met in those formative years are still an integral part of my life. We laughed, cried, studied, and even struggled together. Some of these relationships have withstood the test of time, and to this day, we support one another through life’s various journeys.

In true Ghanaian fashion, our friendship circles became more like extended families. We attended each other’s family events, shared meals, and encouraged one another through the dreaded exams. Those friendships were not just built on the common experience of schooling but on a deep sense of solidarity and understanding.

As I look back, I realize how much my alma mater has shaped me. It moulded me into the person I am today, equipped with knowledge, values, and a network of lifelong allies. The school didn’t just impart knowledge but also instilled in us the importance of giving back. In the spirit of “Sankofa,” many of us return to contribute to the institution that gave us so much.

Whether through mentoring current students, contributing to school projects, or simply sharing our experiences, giving back is our way of saying thank you. It’s about ensuring that the next generation of students can have the same life-changing experience that we did.

In Ghana, the bond between a person and their alma mater runs deep. It’s a connection that transcends time and distance. Whether we return for alumni meetings, homecoming events, or simply reminisce about the good old days, our alma mater remains a significant part of our identity.

For me, my alma mater is not just a school I attended; it’s a place that helped shape my worldview, challenged me to be better, and provided a foundation that will support me for the rest of my life. It is, and will always be, home.
