Tamale District Court 1 has issued a stern warning on illegal power connections by sentencing Wahab Shiraz to six months imprisonment with hard labor and imposing a GHS 6,000 fine. Presiding Judge Derrick Annan also ordered Shiraz to pay GHS 10,096.55 to Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) for electricity stolen through unauthorized connections.

Failure to pay the fine could result in an additional seven-month prison term, extending his total sentence to 13 months. Shiraz, a resident of Bulpella in Tamale, admitted guilt to charges under the Electricity Supply and Distribution Rules 2005. His illegal activities were uncovered during NEDCo’s Mass Revenue Mobilisation Exercise in December 2023, leading to prosecution and conviction after he ignored investigation notices. NEDCo’s legal representative, Ms. Esther Yirbom, urged against illegal connections, highlighting cooperation options to mitigate penalties.
