Bidzina Ivanishvili, former prime minister of Georgia, has pledged £8.4m to the national football team following their 2-0 victory over Portugal at Euro 2024. The win in Gelsenkirchen secured Georgia a spot in the last-16 stage, where they will face Spain.

Ivanishvili, who founded the ruling Georgian Dream party and served as prime minister in 2012, called the win a “historic and dream victory.” He promised another £8.4m (30 million Georgian Lari) if the team beats Spain.

Born in Georgia, Ivanishvili made his fortune in Russia in the 1990s through banking, computers, and metals. Forbes estimates his wealth at £3.87bn. The donations will come from his charitable foundation.

Although Ivanishvili stepped down as prime minister after a year, he remains influential as the honorary chairman of the Georgian Dream party. Recently, players from Georgia’s Euro 2024 squad criticized the party over a controversial “foreign agents” law, which led to significant protests.Georgia, participating in the European Championship for the first time, will play Spain in Cologne on Sunday at 8pm BST.
