The Ghana Police Service recently found itself embroiled in controversy following allegations made by Johnson Asiedu Nketia, Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), regarding orders from higher authorities for the arrest of three individuals in possession of firearms. The alleged incident occurred in Ofankor, situated within the Awutu Senya East Constituency.

In a video circulating on social media, Asiedu Nketia claimed that the Accra Regional Police Commander, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), and the Inspector-General of Police had informed him of these purported orders. However, the Ghana Police Service swiftly refuted these claims, describing them as false and lacking any substantive basis.

In an official statement released on June 9, the police clarified that none of the mentioned officers had made such pronouncements at any time. They emphasized that the allegations made by Asiedu Nketia were entirely without merit and sought to set the record straight regarding the circumstances surrounding the arrests.

According to the police, the three suspects were apprehended after a Pump Action gun with four rounds of ammunition was discovered in their vehicle at the Electoral Commission’s offices in Ofankor. Following their arrest, the suspects were duly cautioned and granted bail pending further investigations into the matter.

Furthermore, the Ghana Police Service reiterated its unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring public safety across the country. They emphasized the importance of maintaining trust and confidence in the integrity of law enforcement institutions and urged the public to disregard the unfounded claims made in the video circulated by Asiedu Nketia.

In conclusion, the dismissal of allegations made by the Ghana Police Service regarding ‘orders from above’ underscores the significance of factual accuracy and transparency in matters of law enforcement. As the investigation into the possession of firearms continues, it remains imperative for all parties involved to adhere to due process and uphold the principles of justice and fairness.
