In a tragic incident, a 76-year-old woman, Afia Sarpomaa, was killed by her daughter, Joyce Boateng, in Abuakwa Asenemaso, Atwima Nwabiagya South District of the Ashanti Region, over accusations of witchcraft.

On the morning of June 17, 2024, Joyce reportedly stormed her mother’s room, accusing her of bewitching the family based on her pastor’s claims. She then stabbed her mother to death.

According to family head George Badu Gyan, Joyce attempted to take her own life afterward but was stopped by residents who saw her in blood-stained clothes heading to the cemetery. They prevented her from consuming a toxic substance she had picked up from an agro-chemical shop.

Joyce confessed to the police that her actions were influenced by two pastors who convinced her that her mother was a witch. She was taken to the police station and later to the hospital after drinking poison. The community’s Assembly Member, Isaac Badu Boateng, confirmed the police had moved the body to the mortuary for autopsy.

Boateng also urged the media to address the harmful influence of certain pastors who incite violence by making baseless accusations of witchcraft, leading to family tragedies like this one.

The police have apprehended Joyce, and her mother’s body is at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for further examination.
