A shocking scene unfolded along the Accra-Winneba Highway as a bridge connecting nearby communities suddenly collapsed. The chaos ensued after a contractor, busy with improvements on the Kasoa-Cape Coast Highway, decided to shut down the main bridge over River Ayensu in the Gomoa East District.

River Ayensu, a significant water passage, was undergoing changes as the contractor aimed to replace the old bridge with a sturdier one capable of handling more water. But nature had other plans. At 2:30 pm on Wednesday, the river surged unexpectedly, flooding nearby areas including Gomoa Mampong and surrounding communities.

With over 150 homes submerged and countless commuters left stranded, urgent calls for help ring out. It’s a race against time to restore the road and bring relief to those affected by this unforeseen disaster.

It’s so sad and unfortunate that such a coincident happened in this era where things are difficult. The government should be able to quickly bring on board more experienced contractors to aid in restoring the damaged bridge this is because more rains are to come due to the season. My sincere sympathy to everyone who one way or the other is affected.

Government should do the needful by savaging the whole situation in restoring the road because it is one of the major roads in Ghana.
