Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere, a political analyst from the University of Cape Coast, has questioned the authenticity of a report from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) that predicts Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the preferred running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. The report claims the Energy Minister is favoured by over 60% of NPP members, far ahead of his closest rival, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, who has just over 10%.

Dr. Otchere expressed his doubts on Ghana Tonight, stating that the significant lead of Dr. Opoku Prempeh appears artificial and lacks scientific basis. He questioned the credibility of the survey, suggesting it does not reflect the actual situation.

The alleged NIB report surveyed 5,116 NPP delegates nationwide, including executives at various levels. It found that 76.2% of respondents preferred Dr. Opoku Prempeh as the running mate, with Dr. Adutwum following at 10.16%. Other potential candidates included Apostle Dr. Opoku Onyinah and Bryan Acheampong.

The report also noted that 84% of respondents believe Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s charisma and popularity make him the ideal running mate. However, it cautioned that his role as Energy Minister, amidst ongoing power issues, could affect his candidacy. The NIB recommended measures to strengthen his performance in the energy sector to improve the party’s prospects in the 2024 elections.
